Leading With Purpose: Cynthia Mitchell Heard, the Los Angeles Urban League, and The Power of Legacy

Wendy Gladney

Upland, CA — Occasionally a leader emerges whose journey is about more than personal achievement, it becomes a symbol of progress, possibility, and purpose for an entire community. Such is the case with Cynthia Mitchell Heard, President and CEO of the Los Angeles Urban League. As the first woman to lead the organization in nearly a century of service, Heard is not simply making history; she is building upon it. Her leadership reflects a powerful truth: when preparation meets purpose, barriers become bridges and legacies are expanded for future generations.

For many people, success is measured by titles and accomplishments. For organizations like the Los Angeles Urban League, success is measured by lives transformed, communities strengthened, and opportunities created. Since its founding in 1921, the Los Angeles Urban League movement has been committed to advancing economic empowerment, educational opportunities, workforce development, and civil rights for underserved communities. It has served as a beacon of hope for individuals seeking not just equality, but the tools and resources necessary to thrive. Under Heard’s leadership, that mission continues with renewed energy and vision.

As I reflect on her remarkable journey, I am reminded that leadership is not about being the first; it is about making sure you are not the last. The significance of becoming the first woman to lead the Los Angeles Urban League in close to 90 years is not simply symbolic. It sends a message to young women and girls throughout our communities that there is room for them at every table of influence and decision-making. When people see someone who looks like them leading an institution of impact, they begin to imagine new possibilities for themselves. They begin to believe that their dreams are attainable and that their voices matter.

What makes Heard’s leadership particularly meaningful is that it is rooted in service. Throughout her career, she has demonstrated a commitment to uplifting others, advocating for equity, and creating pathways to success. Those qualities are especially important in today’s world, where many individuals and families continue to face economic uncertainty, educational disparities, housing challenges, and barriers to opportunity. Organizations like the Los Angeles Urban League stand in the gap, helping individuals move from surviving to thriving. One of the most exciting developments on the horizon is the announcement that the National Urban League Conference will return to Los Angeles in 2027 after a 25-year absence. It is one of the nation’s largest and most influential gatherings focused on civil rights, economic empowerment, education, public policy, entrepreneurship, workforce development, and community advancement. Thousands of leaders from across the country will convene in Los Angeles to share ideas, forge partnerships, and develop solutions to some of the most pressing issues facing our nation.

Another highlight on the horizon is the organization’s annual Whitney M. Young, Jr. Awards, an event that honors individuals and organizations whose leadership and service reflect the values of one of the nation’s most influential civil rights leaders. Whitney M. Young, Jr. understood that meaningful change requires collaboration, courage, and vision. His legacy reminds us that progress is achieved when people come together across sectors and communities to create opportunities for those who have historically been left behind. That same spirit continues today through the work of the Los Angeles Urban League and the leadership of Cynthia Mitchell Heard.

As The Purpose Partner, I often speak with women who find themselves standing at crossroads. They wonder if they are qualified enough, experienced enough, or capable enough to pursue the calling placed before them. They question whether they belong in the room. Cynthia Mitchell Heard’s story offers a powerful reminder that purpose often requires us to walk through doors that have never been opened before. It requires courage to step into spaces where few have gone before us. It requires faith to believe that our unique experiences have prepared us for the assignment ahead. It has been proven anything is possible for anyone who believes and works hard to achieve their goals.
