Carson to Host Free Hazardous Waste and E-Waste Drop-Off Oct. 31

Carson, CA — Residents can get rid of old paint, household chemicals, batteries and unwanted electronics for free on Saturday, Oct. 31, at a drive-thru collection event in Carson.

The City of Carson Free Household Hazardous Waste and E-Waste Collection Event runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the West Maintenance Building parking lot of the A.K. Warren Water Resource Facility, 24501 S. Figueroa St. The event is run by Los Angeles County Public Works and the Los Angeles County Sanitation Districts and is open to all county residents.

These materials can’t legally go in household trash bins or down drains. Paints, solvents and other chemicals can contaminate soil and groundwater, and batteries and electronics contain metals that need special handling.

What to Bring

The event accepts:

  • Paint, solvents and other household chemicals
  • Household cleaners, pesticides and automotive fluids
  • Batteries
  • Medical sharps
  • Electronic waste, including computers, monitors, TVs and other devices

What Not to Bring

The event does not accept:

  • Waste from businesses
  • Tires
  • Regular household trash
  • Large appliances such as refrigerators, stoves and washers
  • Explosives, ammunition and radioactive materials

Before You Go

  • Know the limit. State law caps transport at 15 gallons or 125 pounds of hazardous waste per trip.
  • Pack it right. Keep items in their original labeled containers if possible, put them in a sturdy box and never mix products together. Expect to leave the containers.
  • Load the trunk. Hazardous waste must be in the trunk or truck bed, separate from other items.
  • Stay in your car. Workers will unload your trunk.
  • Getting there. Enter the facility from Figueroa Street and follow signs to the West Maintenance Building lot.
