Carson City Treasurer, Monica Cooper
As voters prepare for the Nov. 3 general election, The Carson Compass continues its Meet the Candidate series, introducing candidates seeking to represent Carson and surrounding communities at the local, state and federal levels.
Carson City Treasurer Monica Cooper is seeking another term. She says she still treats the job as a privilege after more than a decade in office.
“Although I’ve been your treasurer for 11 years, I do not take the position for granted,” Cooper said in her response to The Carson Compass candidate questionnaire. “Every day I walk through city hall doors I am there to serve the residents of Carson.”
Cooper is running unopposed.
Growing City Revenue
Cooper said her first priority would be to “protect and grow city revenue so that we will have the needed funding to fix our issues.”
She named homelessness, affordable housing and infrastructure as the three most important issues facing Carson.
To keep residents informed, she said she would “provide transparency to city finances and maintain an open-door policy.”
Experience
Before serving as treasurer, Cooper spent 19 years managing State of California revenue as an administrator.
She is a California Certified Municipal Treasurer. She holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in public administration from Cal State Dominguez Hills. She also once owned a real estate and mortgage company in Carson and serves on the Carson/Gardena YMCA board of directors.
Asked what voters might not learn from her campaign materials, Cooper said: “I’m loyal to my community.”

Cooper lists endorsements from the Carpenters union, the Martin Luther King Jr. Democratic Club and the Los Angeles County Democratic Party.
