Mayor Lula Davis-Holmes to Host Ninth Annual Backpack Giveaway for Carson Families

Mayor Lula Davis-Holmes

Carson, CA — Carson students and families preparing for the new school year are invited to attend Mayor Lula Davis-Holmes’ Ninth Annual Backpack Giveaway on Saturday, Aug. 8, at the SouthBay Pavilion Mall.

The free community event is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 20700 Avalon Blvd. in Carson. Backpacks will be distributed to children while supplies last, with family-friendly activities, games and additional community engagement planned.

For nearly a decade, the annual giveaway has helped local families offset some of the expenses associated with returning to school. The cost of backpacks, notebooks, writing supplies, uniforms and other necessities can quickly add up, particularly for households preparing more than one child for the classroom.

The event is hosted by Davis-Holmes in partnership with community organizations, including the Carson Citizens Cultural Arts Foundation and the Julia Banks Williams Foundation.

Beyond distributing school supplies, the gathering provides an opportunity for families to connect with local leaders, organizations and resources in a welcoming community setting.

Back-to-school events can serve an important role in helping students begin the academic year feeling prepared and confident. A new backpack filled with supplies may appear to be a simple gift, but it can ease financial pressure for parents and ensure children arrive at school with the tools they need to participate fully.

The giveaway also reflects Davis-Holmes’ continued emphasis on youth, families and community partnerships.

Each year, the event brings together volunteers, sponsors and local supporters around a common goal: helping Carson students begin the school year on a positive note.

The SouthBay Pavilion has served as the location for previous editions of the mayor’s backpack giveaway, allowing families to attend an event in one of Carson’s most familiar community gathering places.

Families planning to attend should arrive early and be prepared for supplies to be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis. Parents should confirm directly with the organizers whether children must be present or whether identification or proof of residency will be required.

As Carson families prepare for another school year, the annual event offers more than supplies. It provides encouragement to students and demonstrates what can happen when elected leaders, nonprofit organizations, businesses, and residents work together to support local children.
