Carson, CA — The City of Carson brought together hundreds of residents, families, and advocates on Saturday, April 4, for its annual Autism Acceptance 5K—an inspiring community event dedicated to raising awareness, promoting inclusion, and celebrating neurodiversity.
Held around the Carson Event Center, the 5K walk and run welcomed participants of all ages, from seasoned runners to families pushing strollers and children proudly walking in support of autism awareness. The atmosphere was filled with high energy, unity, and purpose as the community showed up in strong numbers to support a cause that continues to impact countless families across the region.
Serving as ambassador for this year’s event, Councilmember Cedric Hicks played a visible and active role in rallying community support and encouraging participation. His presence underscored the City’s ongoing commitment to uplifting families and ensuring that inclusion remains a priority in Carson.
“As someone with a family member on the autism spectrum, I know firsthand how challenging it can be when resources aren’t readily available at the time of diagnosis,” said Carson Mayor Pro Tem Cedric Hicks. “Our children with disabilities don’t want to be treated differently—they simply want to be loved, supported, and understood. That’s why events like Carson’s Autism Acceptance 5K are so important. They bring visibility, connect families to critical resources, and create access where it’s needed most.”
Assemblymember Mike Gipson (centered) presents a certificate of recognition to the City of Carson alongside Councilmembers Rojas and Hicks.
“Celebrating the 10th anniversary of this walk is a powerful reminder of how far we’ve come—and how much more we can do,” Hicks added. “I encourage everyone to stay engaged, come out next year, and help us continue to raise awareness and support for our families.”
Beyond the walk itself, the event featured a vibrant resource fair that connected families with a wide range of services and support systems. Local nonprofit organizations, advocates, and City departments provided information on educational programs, health services, early intervention, and family support resources—ensuring that attendees left not only inspired, but also equipped.
Live entertainment added to the festive environment, while raffle prizes brought excitement and engagement for participants throughout the morning. The event successfully blended celebration with purpose, creating a welcoming space where awareness met action.
In a statement, the City of Carson emphasized the importance of the event, noting that it is designed to “foster inclusion, provide vital resources to families, and celebrate the vibrant neurodiverse community in Carson and the surrounding South Bay area.”
As Autism Awareness Month begins, the Autism Acceptance 5K stands as a powerful reminder of what can be accomplished when a community comes together—walking side by side not just for awareness, but for understanding, acceptance, and lasting impact.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), autism spectrum disorder now affects approximately 1 in 36 children in the United States, reflecting a growing need for awareness, early intervention, and sustained community support. Studies also show that early diagnosis and access to services can significantly improve long-term outcomes, particularly in communication, social development, and independence.
Events like Carson’s Autism Acceptance 5K play a critical role in bridging that gap—reducing stigma and reinforcing a message that neurodiversity is not only recognized, but valued. In cities like Carson, that commitment to inclusion is not just symbolic—it’s active, visible, and community-driven.
