Carson City Council Reviews Public Safety Updates, Recognizes Community Contributions

Carson, CA — The Carson City Council met at City Hall to address a range of municipal issues, including public safety updates, city project reports, proclamations and community announcements.

The meeting, presided over by Mayor Lula Davis-Holmes, included councilmembers Jawane Hilton, Jim Dear, Arleen Bocatija Rojas and Mayor Pro Tem Cedric L. Hicks Sr.

The council session included procedural items and public information reminders before moving into council reports and presentations.

City officials also heard updates from departments and recognized community contributions through proclamations.

During the meeting, councilmembers received a report from a public safety official about emergency response activity in the city. The report highlighted the types of calls handled by the fire department.

“Outside fires made up the majority of the calls with numerous rubbish and trash fires,” the official said during the presentation.

Mayor Pro Tem Cedric L. Hicks Sr. thanked the department following the report and noted efforts to address public safety concerns.

“Thank you, Captain, for that report,” Hicks said. “I’m hoping that your wrist, your arm heals. We got to keep you healthy.”

Councilmember Jawane Hilton also expressed appreciation for the department’s work during the discussion.

“Thank you, Madam Mayor. Captain, thank you. Hope you feel better,” Hilton said. “We know you’re fighting for Carson.”

Hilton also raised concerns about recent criminal activity in one neighborhood.

“I wanted to just bring to your attention there has been a string of break-ins in cars on Coltman in the Victoria Park area,” Hilton said. “People have reached out and asked could they increase patrol.”

The council also addressed ceremonial and informational items during the meeting.

During a presentation from the city’s building and safety contractor, Melissa Deiri, CEO of Transc, thanked city leaders for the opportunity to serve Carson residents.

“Good evening, honorable Madame Mayor, Mayor Pro Tem and City Council members,” Deiri said. “On behalf of Transc and the building and safety division … it’s been a true honor to serve this community for over three years.”

Later in the meeting, city staff presented an update on municipal development and economic initiatives.

Community and Economic Development Director Nathan Freeman provided an overview of efforts to promote development opportunities in the city and highlighted marketing materials staff prepared for potential investors and developers.

During the discussion, Mayor Pro Tem Hicks thanked Freeman for the presentation and the materials prepared for the council.

“Thank you, Madam Mayor. Thank you, Nathan, for this widget that we have because I think this is well overdue,” Hicks said.

Public comment during the meeting was brief. City Clerk Monique Belton informed the council that only one speaker had submitted a comment card for a non-agenda item.

“I only have one comment card and it’s for a non-agendaized item,” Belton told the council.

The speaker addressed city leaders and thanked them for their work while expressing interest in continued engagement with the city.

“God bless you all and thank you for your time,” the speaker said.

Following public comment, councilmembers shared announcements and updates regarding city initiatives and upcoming community events.

Councilmembers discussed ongoing outreach efforts and improvements taking place throughout the city, including economic development projects and initiatives aimed at attracting businesses and developers.

During closing remarks near the end of the meeting, Mayor Lula Davis-Holmes reflected on the city’s progress and community pride.

“We got a special city,” Davis-Holmes said.

The Carson City Council regularly meets at Carson City Hall, 701 E. Carson St., where meetings are livestreamed and open to the public in accordance with California’s open meeting laws. Residents can also participate through public comment during designated portions of council meetings.
