Communities in and around Carson are hosting a range of events throughout the second half of March to mark Women’s History Month, with programs highlighting women’s leadership, wellness, arts and athletics.
Events span nearby Long Beach, Torrance and South Los Angeles, offering opportunities for residents of the South Bayto celebrate the achievements of women while also exploring issues affecting women in their communities.
Several of the programs place particular emphasis on Black women’s cultural and artistic contributions.
Long Beach City College will host multiple Women’s History Month programs during the latter half of the month.
One of the featured events, “Bloom & Bliss: Embrace Wellness, Celebrate Women,” is scheduled for March 18 at the college’s Liberal Arts Campus.
The event is designed as a wellness-focused gathering where participants can engage in mindfulness activities,creative expression and community conversations centered on women’s well-being.
Also at Long Beach City College, the campus will host “Meet Your Village: Women’s Softball Tailgate Celebration” on March 27.
The event combines a community tailgate with a women’s softball game, highlighting women’s athletics while encouraging students and local residents to connect through sports.
Additional Women’s History Month programming is taking place throughout Long Beach. A Women’s HistoryMonth Community Art Walk, scheduled for March 22 in the city’s East
Village Arts District, will feature gallery exhibits and performances highlighting women artists.
The event showcases local creative talent and highlights the role women have played in shaping the region’s arts scene.
Another Long Beach event, the Lucky Girl Sunset Walk on March 18, focuses on wellness and community connection.
The walk invites women to gather along the waterfront for an evening dedicated to physical health, networking and empowerment.
Live music is also part of the Women’s History Month celebrations in the South Bay.
A Women’s Rock Festival scheduled for March 13 in Long Beach will feature performances by women musicians and performers.
Sports will also play a role in this year’s observances.
A series of NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament watch parties is expected to begin in mid-March at venues inLong Beach, highlighting women athletes during one of the biggest events in collegiate sports.
South Los Angeles, particularly the historic cultural hub of Leimert Park, will also host events celebrating women in music and the arts.
A mid-March Women in Jazz celebration in the neighborhood is expected to highlight women performers and cultural leaders.
Leimert Park has long served as a center for Black arts and culture in Los Angeles, and many of its events during March emphasize the contributions of Black women musicians and artists.
Libraries in the South Bay region are also participating in Women’s History Month with programming highlighting women authors and historical figures.
Branches of the Los Angeles County Library system near Carson, including locations in Carson, Compton and Torrance, are hosting book talks and educational programs during March.
Regional cultural venues are also expected to host Women’s History Month celebrations later in the month, including community events recognizing women leaders and advocates from the South Bay.
Women’s History Month, observed nationally each March, traces its origins to the women’s history movement of the late 1970s and was officially recognized by Congress in 1987.
